Message in A Bottle

Check out the "Message in a Bottle" Project from the GOOD blog. It was inspired by the Voyager launches. I can't believe someone launched a gold record into space because it was "the most advanced storage medium of the time". Amazing. A needle and cartridge and illustrated instructions on how to play the record are included with the record- BYO turntable, I suppose? You can hear all the sounds and see what music pieces were selected to represent the diversity of Earth on NASA's website right here. I question the selection of "chimpanzee" and "wild dog". I guess there was a book of all the images and cd of all the sounds and Carter's speech, but it's out of print. The website has alot of the record content, though. So interesting. Putting technology in a time capsule, now there's a problem! They electroplated uranium on the record cover so future beings could calculate the amount of time that had passed since the record was placed on the spacecraft based on it's decay. Future beings are expected to be very good at math and interpreting illustrations. I wonder if there are any mega-geeks in their 50's or 60's with tattoos of the images on this golden record cover. I know I'm tempted.....

While I prefer her old name (lawsuit-what can ya do) I definitely
prefer her new band & live show. S.F was first on her US tour...so
don't miss her as she heads east! Her dancers were amazing in this
totally unexpected & completely original way. AND she gave a Philly
shout out as well as the expected Brooklyn shout out. Amanda Blank had a good dance floor shaker or two, but she might be better off sticking to rapping. That's where she really kills it. This blur of gold is the only photo I got, sorry.

Went to a Giants game and this is one view from the stadium. It's a beautiful stadium. Every seat has a great view, and the ads, announcers, and music were tasteful and understated. So San Francisco. I forgot how fun baseball is to watch live, especially without the weird feeling that something bad is going to happen & a million fights are going to break out that one often feels at Philly events. Don't get me wrong though, I wore my most understated black on black Phillies hat to the Giants game. I hoped the Giants would beat Philly rivals, the Mets, and they were ahead most of the game but lost it in the end. However, the Phillies beat the Washington Nationals the same night. Phew. I think my hat helped.

We saw the Nick Cave "SoundSuits" exhibit at Yerba Buena. It's amazing, especially in person. There are about 40 or 50 extremely tall suits in one room, along with some bears and beavers. The other room contains videos of the suits in action, much better than these videos on YouTube, but what can you do. It's very inspiring - all the attention to detail, craftsmanship, the joy and fun of it all - the deliberate and random. See this show if it comes near you! He's coming back to Yerba Buena for a performance and I can't wait.

It's been raining for days. Everyone warned me this would happen, they said the rainy season seemed to be delayed just to trick me into falling in love with SF. It almost worked. But then the drought set in and everyone predicted doom and gloom and hills on fire when it gets hot in the summer. That may still happen, of course, and it made the amazing weather much less enjoyable. But now the rain has come and come and come and I'm forced to try to love this city, as in all things, just the way it is. I think little parts of me are starting to like little parts of SF, it's been happening slowly very slowly since I got back from Christmas in Canada and New Year's in Philly. Gosh there is so much catching up to do about that whole time period. It was amazing. I was so happy to see all the people I love so much, the people I wish were walking down the street with me here, so I could say "This is my favorite secret doorway, here behind all those ferns" or "This is the best vegetarian sushi ever", or "There is a beautiful beach just beyond this cliff". I got to do that a bit when Caitlin was here. Caitlin! What a perfect visit of doing nothing. Rath and Jamison were here too - and gone in what felt like 5 minutes. I've got a few pictures from their visits I'll post soon (our internet is sooo slow, and it's the highest speed. Sucks!) But anyway, it was good to see everyone and so sweet to have such a warm welcome home over the holidays. It was also good to see how much things had changed in such a short time. I'm still haunted by this sensation that this isn't really my life here and at any second I could be back at my old job at my old desk, or in my old car, or our old backyard. Those memories are still so fresh and vivid. Seeing how everything back home is different, though, helped me accept that here and now is here, and now. And right now it's a perfect day and the sky is bright blue and clear and the clouds are white and whispy and the wind is just present enough to push you gently down the street.

Erwin Wirm's project, One Minute Sculptures, invites participants to make the drawings that are scribbled on the platform that you stand on: part participation, part performance, part silly game. It was fun to try, and balancing these fake oranges was harder than it seems; they were lightweight and wobbly, for sure.

biking to work

After a false start bike commuting to my two jobs in the mission and the castro due to a bike accident, I'm back on the wheels. I've learned a few things:

1. If it seems like all the other bike commuters are trying to race you, it's because they are.

2. Even if you feel that it's really exciting that the whole huge pack of 15 of you made it through 7 green lights in a row whipping down Valencia hot on the tails of other giant packs of bike commuters - do not say "Wow, that was totally fun, right!?" once you all come to a red light. Because everyone will ignore you and think you're crazy, or a dork, or both. Comradery, no. Silence, yes.

3. Do not expect that when you get into an accident and go flying off your bike that any of the other cyclists will stop and make sure you're okay, because they won't. The streets are paved with liberal bumper stickers like "practice random acts of kindness" and I'm pretty sure that's what caused my accident.

4. It's true, you really do need rain gear.

All that considered, bikes are still fun.

Remember the Hybrid animal theme from Make Yr Break? Well, one of the flyer designs has found it's way onto a t-shirt for Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction.Courtney has left for Mississippi and the shirts arrived after she left, which is too bad because she's been waiting for them for a *really* long time. Courtney, they look great! I love this design, I almost got it as a tattoo. The hybrid animal print is bright green puffy paint, and the shirt is jet black, the photo just looks gray. The shirts that Art in the Age are making are even nicer than the American Apparel one's they used to use. They're not up for sale yet, but the will be so be sure to get yours HERE. Yay!

Today we took a trip to Flora Grubb to look at plants and gather some inspiration. I thought it would be more like Terrain, but it was much smaller - but still nice. They had a few surprises here and there, like the old car full of plants and some rings of cut down trees that were actually cast in concrete.

As of December 1, we will be at a new house!! We are sad to leave the spot that we share with such amazing housemates now, but an equally amazing housemate must return from her sojurn in Pittsburgh.

Our search was small, but efficient and way less insane than trying to do it from the internet as we attempted to do in the summer. It will come as no surprise that as per our usual Earth-sign tendencies, it is a block away from the house where we live now. New home, here we come!! (photos soon, i promise.) Phew.

I went to see a talk at the San Francisco Art Institute the other evening from Mr. Vergne, a curator who currently works at the DIA Art Center in NY. Before that, he was the chief curator at the Walker, in Minneapolis. It was a call to action, in a similar way to the talk that I went to last week by Nayland Blake and Larry Rinder at Berkeley, where he asked lots of questions: What do we want for ourselves? Can't we do better? What should we do now? How do we decide how we want to represent ourselves?

I like these big questions...the next part is starting to answer them. I s'pose that's our job as artists and curators...and it seems exciting to think of this moment of crisis as a moment of potential, for re-imagining how we want to be in the world and how to make it happen.

We had a party at our house Sunday to celebrate the extended summer weather we've been having here. T-shirt weather in the evenings, a rare thing here. As it turned out, the warm spell broke the night of our party and the usual fog and wind rolled in! Leah brought home amazing chocolate and fancy graham crackers from Miette, and Courtney made homemade vanilla marshmallows and so the trusty firebowl was back in action, ready to toast s'mores and keep us warm all night. The food was truly a feast - Jason grilled steaks, fish, fancy sausages and burgers with the cheese tucked inside, and there were several incredible salads and cheeses, asparagus and corn and more food than I can remember. My housemates are excellent folks and our new friends who dropped by were a treat, along with our tried and true friends (shout out Jenn and Bnz!). By the end of the night, I felt a bit more at home in this city; as you all know we do love to throw a party and it was nice to be able to do so. I took a bunch of pictures with this new application I got - including one of Kramer where he actually looked like himself (he's not very photogenic for such a handsome pooch) and I saved them wrong and all were lost. I managed to snap this photo before the party got started.

Today Kramer and I went on a special date to Pacifica - I've been curious about it so I decided just to drive down there. Turns out Stephanie, who lives there, was back from Australia so we got to see her too. I *tried* to assist her in putting new brake pads on her motorcycle, but I fear I made things worse by squeezing the brake levers at one point. woops. Anyway, Pacifica is a charming beach town - it's what I wish the beach in SF was like. The weather today was incredible and the view off the highway is tops. I think I even got a little sun burn. Now, I think I'm catching Courtney's cold so the fun is over - but me and Kramer had a great day at the beach. Thanks Stephanie!!

That crazy train in Utah

I posted a picture of this train so long ago and I'm just getting back around to following up. We were driving through Utah, past Salt Lake city and it was SOOOOO hot out. Even though we were in a new car, I kept picturing us getting a flat or the car overheating and our cell phones not working (which they weren't in parts of Utah) and the three of us dehydrating by the side of the road. When we came across a small town we stopped and I bought a whole bunch of water, and refilled my bottle in the bathroom, just in case. I know. I'm ridiculous. There was literally nothing around us but white sand and mirages. I kept saying to myself "Ok, if anything happens I need to remember there's water here around mile 72" and then we'd get closer to what I believed to be water and it would just be all sand. Hot hot sand. I started to really understand all those Warner Brothers cartoons where the characters are dragging themselves across the desert and their tongues are hanging out of their mouths and dragging onto the ground and they a see water and run toward it and do a swan dive into the pond but they just hit the ground and the ground cracks in every direction and they pause there for a second, upside-down with a flattened head... and then they fall over. It was hot like that, and dry like that. Then out of nowhere we see this side road and a HUGE lake - so huge we knew it was real, there were boats on it - and there's this train car off in the distance. We took the next exit and found the side road and made our way back to the train car. It was creepy and beautiful. I"m sorry my camera is terrible. There was also another building along this road, which was a rock show space and had showers and beach access. There were tons of people there hanging out all with long hair and bandanas holding it off their faces. It was bizarre and we later found out it was the sight of some cult classic horror movie that they turned into a completely trashed show space. I will have to research that and post some links later....but here's the train.

Tilden Park Botanic Garden

Today Molly, Jen, Kate and I set out on an adventure that was nearly foiled many times, but we wound up at the Tilden Park Botanic Garden in Berkeley. It was a beautiful day and the grounds were full of people getting married - which was annoying and charming at the same time. We avoided the crowds and checked out the plants, but it wasn't long before a stray cat herded us towards the door (no joke!) just before they closed.
